Beth Story

Beth was born at 38/40 via a Caesarean Section, following a very complicated/High Risk pregnancy. She was a well baby for the first 2 days following her birth. She then became slightly jaundiced (no light therapy required), slow to feed and very sleepy, her urine out put was also low. She was given a one off feed of S26 (her older sister had had this formula with no problems) as a supplement to breast feeds. She vomited the entire 60mls about 10min following the feed, and was unable to be settled by the Midwives for many hours following.
Beth was discharged from hospital on day 4, 300g below her birth weight. Frequent bowel motions began once home, but at this sage they were well within the normal range of a fully breast fed baby. By 2 weeks old she had re-gained her birth weight, but her bowel motions were become more frequent and explosive.

At 10 weeks, her bowel motions were up to 14 EXPLOSIVE (like opening a can of shaken up Coke) OVERFLOWING nappies per day. Her weight gain was poor, about another 300g above her birth weight, despite very frequent breast feeds. She was however sleeping well.
Beth was admitted to Maitland Hospital with Failure to Thrive for Investigation. Her stool tests showed 4+ reducing substances (Lactose Intolerance) and profuse white cells.

The first "proper" diagnosis was made of Milk Protein Allergy (later changed to Milk Protein Intolerance). We (she and I ) were discharged and I was to follow a strict dairy free diet ( I also chose to omit soy) with review in 4 days. At the review Beth had actually lost a few grams weight, and she was now not sleeping, and very distressed, her over all condition had deteriorated, so the decision was made to commence her immediately on Neocate.

In the next 10 days, Beth put on a total of 1000g. It took some weeks for her bowels to return to normal (what is considered normal for a Neocate fed baby), and took a further 4months for her to catch up with her "mile stones". At the 6 month check, she still had some head-lag, and was unable to roll over by 10months she was walking confidently and running. At 16 months she had a slight speech delay.

At 6 months Beth was commenced on solids, and Skin prick tested for allergies. She had no allergies on testing, but was obviously reacting to all the foods as they were trialled into her diet. After some "doctor shopping" she was finally diagnosed with Multiple food intolerances, and no IgE allergies. The level of her food intolerance is severe, at 2yrs and 9 months she still lives on Neocate, white rice and potatoes only, she also has Chemical Sensitivities. Developmentally, she is now above the average for her height and weight, but on the 50 centile with weight compared to height, and she is on or above par with her age group re motor skills and intelligence.
