Question

My daughter is just over 3 months (exclusively breastfed) and has had blood in her stools (although most of the time one can't see it with the naked eye) since March 7th (probably before but this was the first sighting), I began an elimination diet and cut our dairy, soy, nuts, and eggs -- the blood seemed to be decreasing but on Thursday the blood had increased so we began Neocate formula and took her off my breasmilk (I'm devastated). My daughter is a happy (laughs a lot), energetic little one -- her symptoms are the blood in stool, slight redness/rash on her chest, belly and back and stuffy nose in the morning. She does tend to nose dive into the shirt of anyone holding her at times to rub her face or nose (although there is no rash or redness on her face), we are washing her clothes in only warm water to make sure she is not allergic to the baby detergent.Long story short -- I an concerned since I have read about constipation with Neocate formula and would like to avoid this side effect if it is likely to happen. How long after starting this new formula should we expect to see a BM? She went 5-6 times a day on breastmilk and has not gone for almost 2 days since starting the formula -- I can't seem to find any info on side effects of Neocate or treatment of constipation due to Neocate...should I try the karo syrup, if so, how soon, can I assume no BM means constipation? Can this irritate her already inflamed insides even more? I am giving her a 1/2 teaspoon of gripe water 3 times a day to help with gas pains and settle her tummy, it seems to be working. What are the long-term considerations if she is constantly given food that is broken down to the basic amino acids, will her body learn to handle the breakdown of complete proteins eventually? Most importantly, why do you think so many babies are developing such sensitivities? Have we messed with the environment too much? too many chemicals? cow's milk have wierd hormones? -- I wish I could continue to breastfeed but I guess the Neocate is what is best for her -- I'm scared that the formula is a foreign substance in her body....

My daughter was born on 5/5/06. Following 3 months of extreme fussiness, painful cries and incolsolablility, her GI doctor put her on Neocate as an experiment (try it for two weeks and see if there is improvement). We've been on it for about 5 days now. The first two days were great! What an improvement. Now, however, she's back to being fussy, spitting up (something she never did before) all the time and gassiness. Once she spits up or passes gas she's more comfortable and stops crying/fidgeting until it starts all over again. Her doctor also has us thickening her formula with Beechnut rice cereal (a change from the Gerber rice cereal that we had her on before). Any ideas as to why she would suddenly develop these symptoms and how we might eleviate them?
My son was born at 32 weeks. He spent his first month in the NICU. When he was released from the hospital, he was just finishing up his supply of Special Care Infant Formula from the hospital and he was also getting my breast milk. One week after he got home, he was back in the NICU for possible infection, because he had projectile vomiting. Infection was ruled out and he was sent home in 3 days. He began having the projectile vomiting that landed him in the doctors office everyday for almost a week. The put him on Allimentium formula. He vomited worse on that, so they put him on Neosure Infant Formula. He still continued vomiting. Finally, I had took him to a different doctor and he ordered an ultrasound of his stomach. He had pyloric stenosis. He had to be admitted to the Childrens Hospital that same day. He had the pyloric stenosis repair 2 days later. The gastroenterologist had said my son has GERD,soy, milk, food, citric acid allergies and had put him on NEOCATE Infant Formula. He will be 1 year-old in 3 weeks, and the doctor had said about putting him on Pepdite Junior when he turns 1. I had talked to a nutritionist about EO28 Splash and she said it would be better for him to go right on that (EO28 Splash) since it is amino-based, and the Pepdite is not and is harder to digest , and also contains soy. the flavor will be grape since it has no citric acid like the orange-pineapple and the tropical fruit. Which do you prefer? Sincerly, Connie. THANK YOU!
I have just switched my 4 month old son's formulas to Neocate. He was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy at 6 weeks and was put on Nutramagen and I had to stop breastfeeding. This last month all the milk protein allergy symptoms returned. He was having horrible abdominal cramping, skin rashes, extreme fussiness, crying and screaming. He has been on the Neocate for two days but his stools smell like chemicals. Is this formula safe for him? He has never had a growing problem, but I couldn't stand watching him suffer. Is the Nutramagen safer?
